While homelessness and need can suddenly come upon any person or family, there are two basic reasons that people are led to SMARM.
1. Near-homeless: People struggling to make ends meet who are in need of help with rent, utilities and transportation. 2. Homeless due to Catastrophic or Life-Changing Events: House fires and subsequent loss of personal belongings; loss of employment without any available support system on which to fall back; overwhelming medical burdens; and relocation to the Smoky Mountains seeking new economic opportunities and a chance to improve family's circumstances.
Oftentimes, individuals and families that come to Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries have limited financial resources and limited knowledge of local resources, such as housing and employment, which can lead to a rapid decline in their ability to take care of their own needs and the needs of their family.
